EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

JULY 16, 2015

Preamble

Motion by:

SUPERVISOR RIDLEY-THOMAS AND MAYOR BUTTS

July 16, 2015

Relating to Item 70: 2015-1092

Naming the Westchester/”Veteran” Station along the Crenshaw/LAX Line

Per Metro’s Property Naming Policy (Policy), Item 70 recommends that stations along the Crenshaw/LAX Line (Line) be named based on either the street intersection or the community in which the station is located. With construction over 30% complete, final names for the Line should be adopted by the Board of Directors in a timely manner in order to facilitate station signage design and fabrication in a manner that is cohesive with the overall construction schedule.

The Policy requires a community input process for soliciting feedback on proposed station names, which concluded for the Line in Fall 2014. The station located at the northwest corner of Florence Avenue and Hindry Avenue received the most varied community input. The station will serve several distinct communities as it borders the City of Inglewood and the Westchester community within the City of Los Angeles. The station also neighbors a large veteran housing community run by U.S. Vets which serves over 540 veterans on a daily basis. It is fitting that the name for this station be reflective and inclusive of both of these neighboring communities.
