Item 42 : Transportation for Los Angeles Unified School District Students During a Labor Action
Beginning January 14, 2019, families with students of the Los Angeles Unified School District are expected to be impacted by a labor action.
In the event of a labor action, MTA has a critical role to help students access safe places to spend time and manage the impact to their daily travel needs.
During the school year, classrooms and campuses offer students safe places to go, learn, stay active, and grow. During a labor action, families have to make tough decisions about what is best for kids, where children can receive regular meals and assistance, how they travel, and where they can receive appropriate care and proper supervision.
To support impacted families during a labor action, the City of Los Angeles is committed to ensuring that parents have options for their kids until all of our students return to the classroom. Specifically, the Los Angeles Public Library and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks are making additional resources available to families that need assistance at select facilities - offering food, extended hours, and expanded programming.
However, students must have the means to access these resources, many of which are beyond students’ typical travel needs.
As a result, on Tuesday, January 8, after consultation with Board leadership, MTA announced that it would provide transit services free of fare for LA Unified students showing their ID from 5am to 7pm on days when the labor action may take place.
Board action is required to confirm this necessary action.
